Prince Frederick resident Larry Hilton Mackall, 63, needed to be extricated from his vehicle after crashing shortly after 6:45 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23 in the 200 block of Steeple Chase Drive in his hometown, police said.
According to investigators, Mackall was driving south from a commercial parking lot approaching the intersection of Steeple Chase Drive and Armory Road when he failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign.
When he accelerated past the stop sign, police say that Mackall attempted to make a slight left turn, hopped a curb, hit a light pole, and entered a lower commercial parking lot, coming to rest at a concrete support pillar to a building.
Mackall needed to be extricated from his vehicle, according to state police. He was transported by paramedics to Calvert Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Calvert County building inspector responded to the scene and determined that the structure was safe following the crash. No other injuries were reported.
It remains unclear what caused Mackall to crash.
